I was part of deviantart many years ago. If I remember correctly... back when I was in ninth grade (so over 10 years ago). From what I remember then, my art was not very much developed. I did a lot of sketches.... with pencil. I've come to realize that drawing with pencil... sucks. I needed to expand my utensils and paint more, and use instead of pencil, charcoal. This is my new favourite item to use. Although it is messy and hard to erase, I found that it adds much more contrast to my images then any normal stupid pencil would ever do for me.
